Here’s how it works!

You dispose of wood in almost every household. A distinction is made between treated wood and untreated wood. In a household, garden or when demolishing old buildings, waste wood can accumulate for disposal.

Typical examples of waste wood disposal (AII/AIII wood) from the construction and furniture industry include building chipboard, ceiling panels, roof beams, floorboards, windows and doors without glass, flooring, coated wood, painted wood without glass, laminate, parquet, ornamental beams, shelves, cupboards, pressboard panels and solid wood. This also includes all wood for everyday use such as toys, furniture material or transport boxes.

The amount of waste wood for disposal in Germany is huge. In order to regulate the disposal of these large quantities of waste wood, the Recycling Management Act (Kreislaufwirtschaftrecht) was expanded in 2002 to include the separate Waste Wood Ordinance (Altholzverordnung).

In this Waste Wood Ordinance, waste wood is divided into 4 categories according to AI, AII, AIII and AIV, depending on the pollutant content. A distinction is made between:

AI wood disposal: untreated, natural wood

It concerns untreated, old wood if the wood has been processed in its natural state and has not been treated with glazes or similar finishings. The wood may only have been mechanically processed. It has not been exposed to pollution or contaminated with pollutants.

Examples include: Pallets and transport boxes made of solid wood.
The disposal of untreated wood is optimal. It is recyclable and, in addition to thermal recycling, also well-suited for material recycling for the production of new chipboard or pressed wood.

AII wood disposal: Treated wood

Waste wood in category AII is waste wood that has been glued, painted, coated, lacquered or otherwise treated, whereby the coating does not contain halogen organic compounds or wood preservatives.
If the wood is no longer suitable for further material processing, it is sent to a power plant for thermal recycling.

Examples of AII wood are: Floorboards, doors and frames from interior construction, timber without harmful impurities.

AIII wood disposal: Treated wood

Waste wood of category AIII contains halogen organic compounds in its coating. However, like AII wood, it has not been treated with wood preservative.
AIII woods can be thermally utilised in the power plant.

Examples of waste wood in category AIII include:
Glued wood panels, furniture, kitchens and other interior fittings with halogen organic lacquers and coatings (PVC) or edge banding, pallets with composite materials, decorative beams, wooden toys

AIV Wood Disposal

Waste wood in the AIV category is subject to monitoring under waste legislation. It has been treated with wood preservatives, in order to protect the wood against destructive insects and fungi or to reduce flammability. As a rule of thumb, these are glazes, paints or wood preservatives intended for outdoor use. These wood preservatives are mixed with harmful substances to make the wood weather-resistant and resistant to pests, fungi, etc.

Typical examples of AIV wood treated with hazardous substances include: Fences, railway sleepers, pergolas, vineyard posts etc.

Holzentsorgung

It is best to dispose of wood sorted according to the categories listed above. Of course, AIV wood disposal needs special treatment because the wood contains wood preservatives that are harmful to health. This waste wood must be collected by way of a special disposal certificate for hazardous waste. As a specialist disposal company, we can take care of this for you. Please do not dispose of wood with other types of waste. Waste wood must be disposed of separately.

HRG HEISTERNER HOLZ RECYCLING GMBH disposes of your wood. If you have any further questions about professional wood disposal or if you want to dispose of wood, please call us. We will be happy to advise you!
